The Davis Trailer World Hitch and Towing Guide

WHAT INFORMATION WILL I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE TOWING?

Whether you’re pulling a travel trailer for the first time or simply hitching up a cargo carrier, it is important to be prepared. To tow safely, you will need to know the answers to the following basic questions.

1. WHAT TYPE OF TRAILER WILL YOU BE TOWING

You will need to know exactly what type of trailer you are planning to tow. Is it a heavy livestock trailer, a medium boat trailer or something lighter like a smaller utility trailer?

Does the trailer you are towing have brakes, and if so is it a basic surge brake or will you need a brake controller?

What type of hitch receiver will you need – a standard ball hitch, heavy duty hitch or a gooseneck hitch?

2. WHAT KIND OF VEHICLE WILL YOU BE TOWING WITH?

Every vehicle has different capacities for what it may tow legally and safely. What kind of vehicle will you be using to tow? Does your vehicle have a standard tow package like those that are often included with a pickup truck or will you be using a small car and likely need to hook up your own towing equipment?

3. WHAT TYPE OF TOWING WILL YOU BE DOING?

Another question that needs to be answered is what type of towing will you be doing? Will it be a short trip to the boat launch or a cross country haul. Is it mostly flat roads and interstate or will it be mountains and bumpy roads? There are ways to make these trips more comfortable while also making sure your vehicle can handle the requirements, such as weight distribution hitches, transmission coolers, enhanced brake controllers, increased tire size etc…
